Migrating from the Magento 2 extension to the Algolia AI Search & Discovery app in Shopify is possible, but it requires careful planning and configuration to ensure a smooth transition. This guide will walk you through the entire migration process — from preparing your Magento environment to configuring your new Shopify integration — so you can maintain search continuity, minimize downtime, and deliver a seamless shopping experience to your customers.

Before Getting Started
Please make sure to create a backup of your Magento store, and create a Shopify store. You don't need to add products to your Shopify store yet. Note that you can use the same Algolia app you were using for Magento.
Do not import your data until your Magento store is backed up and your Shopify store is set-up. Data importing will occur in the next step.
Migrate Data from Magento to Shopify
We recommend Magento and Shopify's guides for exporting data from Magento and importing that data into Shopify. We do not provide data migration services.
Once this step is completed, please verify that the data is appearing as expected in your Shopify store's backend.
Set up the Algolia AI Search & Discovery app
You may now start setting up the Algolia AI Search & Discovery app in your new Shopify store by following our Quickstart guide.
Important: You can use the same application. But, you will need to create new indices because Magento and Shopify have different indexing schemas. You can learn more about Shopify's indexing schemas in our Shopify documentation.
Replicate customizations from Magento store in InstantSearch page on Shopify
If you'd like to keep the customizations made on your Magento store, you can replicate those customizations in your Shopify store.
You may read through any article under the Building Search UI and Advanced customization sections of our Shopify documentation. However, we want to highlight the following articles for Shopify customizations:
- Custom hook events
- Global events
- Adding a custom plugin to Autocomplete
- Updating the facet configuration
Set up click and conversion events
If you're using our Analytics dashboard, make sure to set up all click and conversion events in Shopify by following our Shopify documentation. You may send your click and conversion events by using a userToken or a Shopify web pixel.
